Renting privately owned homes

The demand for social housing is high and you may have to wait for a while to find a suitable home with us so renting a privately owned home may be a good option.

Help we can offer

  • Carry out an affordability assessment to make sure you can afford the rent and living costs
  • Check you are receiving all the benefits you are entitled to
  • Negotiate a rent reduction with a landlord, when appropriate
  • Financial assistance for rent in advance and/or a deposit (subject to meeting certain criteria)
  • Discretionary Housing Payments

Discretionary housing payments (DHP) may provide extra money if you need help with your housing costs. Cheltenham Borough Council assesses every case individually by looking at the finances and personal circumstances of the person making the claim.
