‘Opportunity Cheltenham,’ is a new scheme to help local people find work in the borough, which launches on Friday 20 July.
It is a partnership between Jobcentre Plus, Cheltenham Borough Council, local employers and key partners, and aims to help over 200 local people into jobs, training or self employment.
Through the scheme, jobseekers can benefit from an in depth face-to-face interview that will assess their readiness for work, aspirations and experience. They may be referred to partner organisations to overcome barriers preventing them achieving their goals. This, combined with existing support and additional mentoring, aims to ensure that they are well equipped and better prepared to compete for new jobs at the interview stage.
Cllr Steve Jordan, leader of Cheltenham Borough Council, says: Opportunity Cheltenham aims to benefit both our local employers and local people looking for work.
It will help employers access a fresh new source of potential local employees, as well as offering a new approach to helping and preparing people compete for jobs.
To help make this a success, we would really like to hear from any employers, voluntary or community sector organisations offering potential new vacancies, work placements, mentoring, volunteering opportunities, and apprenticeships.
Nick Browning, Gloucestershire and West of England Jobcentre Plus District Manager, added: Opportunity Cheltenham will give jobseekers access a wide range of support to help them get into work quickly. There are hundreds of jobs available across Cheltenham and this partnership will help people get the skills and experience they need to take up these opportunities.
Local employers with up coming job vacancies or development opportunities are invited to attend the launch event on 20 July at 2pm in the Council Chamber to find out more about the initiative.
