Cheltenham Borough Council is upgrading the parking system in Regent Arcade Multi-Storey Car Park to a new, more flexible system to coincide with improvements to the shopping centre.
The system is scheduled to be up and running by Wednesday 4 July and will use car registration numbers to check how long cars have been parked so that drivers can then pay for the time they have used:
• car registration numbers are registered on the way into and out of the car park
• before leaving, motorists enter the first three digits of their registration number in the parking machine then choose how to pay - by cash or card
• drivers can register to pay online or by mobile phone up to 24 hours after exiting the car park
• or by monthly direct debit
• the scheme also covers permit parking.
The new system will replace the current pay and display system which has come to the end of its lifecycle and no longer has service provider support. It will improve traffic flow in and around the car park; offer more payment options; and height sensors are being installed at the entrance to prevent tall vehicles entering and being damaged.
Councillor Andrew McKinlay, cabinet member for built environment, said: "This new system will make it much easier and quicker for motorists to park in Regent Arcade car park as there is no need for barriers or an entry ticket.
The different ways to pay offer more flexibility than your standard pay and display system and you don’t have to guess how long you will be. We are committed to improving Cheltenham so it remains a top destination for tourists, shoppers and businesses."
During the last two weekends of June, Cheltenham Borough Council parking officers will be in the Regent Arcade car park with live demonstrations of the new system, leaflets explaining the changes and a manned information stand to answer any questions. Customer support will also continue once the car parking system is up and running.
