Eagle tower in Cheltenham

On Sunday 22 April, take a trip down Eagle Tower the fast way, all in aid of the mayor’s charities.

Eagle Tower is Cheltenham’s tallest, and one of its most iconic buildings, standing at 168ft. The abseiling event, that is open to everyone, gives people the opportunity to do something amazing, to overcome their fears, or to experience something new, and raise money for 3 incredible charities. There will also be 2 fantastic acts - The Chip Shop Boys and Avert Francis - performing on the day, on a small rooftop where the abseiler’s descent ends.

If you’re not keen on abseiling, you can still support the event by volunteering on the day. Hotshots Sports Club is a local team of netballers and footballers who have come forward as volunteers, along with DA’s Free Weights Gym to work with the Eagle Tower team on the day. We will need help ensuring that participants know where to go on the day, that they receive their safety briefing and get up to the roof in time for their abseil.

The minimum age for the abseil is 8 years, with under 18’s being accompanied by an adult on the day. Up to 3 participants can abseil at any one time, so if you want to be in a team with friends or family, you can.

There is also the opportunity for local businesses to support aspects of the event, such as sponsorship of the volunteers or the certificates that all participants will receive once they have abseiled.

Erin Davies, organiser of the event, said: “I hope this event will raise a huge amount of money for the mayor's charities. We've added a twist this year and themed our abseil ‘Heroes’ and we are encouraging people to come in fancy dress and win prizes.  We know money is tight for everyone but already people have registered to secure their place on the day - its £25 to register and we ask for participants to try and raise a further £75 sponsorship.”

The Mayor, Councillor Barbara Driver, said: “This is a fun day for the whole family, you can take part, cheer on those who are, or enjoy all the other things going on round the Eagle Tower building that day. All while raising money for so many young people in Cheltenham.”

The deadline for registration is Friday 30 March; you can download the registration form from the Cheltenham Borough Council website.
