An exciting new initiative has come to Cheltenham to help everyone easily recycle their waste using their kerbside collections - as well as clean up litter around the borough.
The council has partnered with LitterLotto to make their free app available to residents.
The app also offers automatic bin day reminders to help everyone to stay on top of their waste and recycling.
LitterLotto ‘AtHome’ - for help with kerbside waste and recycling
All residents need to do is download the free app and register for an account. They can then click on the’ AtHome’ feature and use their camera to scan the item that they want to dispose of. Thanks to new AI technology, the app will tell them which recycling bag or box to use, or whether it needs to go in the bin instead.
Every item correctly recycled or binned counts as an entry to an exclusive monthly prize draw, with a £100 cash prize for one lucky resident - and there is also a weekly national £1k jackpot.
LitterLotto ‘Bin it to win it’ - for cleaning up litter around town
Residents can take pictures of litter they have picked up and binned via the app, using the ‘LitterLotto’ feature – and be entered into the £1k monthly prize draw.
Cllr Izaac Tailford, cabinet member for waste, recycling and public realm, says: “We’re excited to work with LitterLotto and we hope that the app will help recycling become a fun and valuable job that the whole family can get involved with.
“It can be challenging at times to know which items can be recycled and we’re always seeking to find new ways to make our kerbside recycling as simple as possible for our residents.
“We’re very keen to see results from ‘bin it to win’ it. We take a great pride in the appearance and cleanliness of our town, however like any borough, some spaces do suffer with littering. LitterLotto should help us to all benefit from cleaner streets and greener spaces.
“The app has been hugely successful in other areas of the UK and we would like to encourage everyone to download the app and take part – you might even win a prize!”
David Landsberg, CEO and founder of LitterLotto®, added: "We’re thrilled to launch this partnership, bringing our innovative products to Cheltenham. By rewarding residents for positive recycling habits, we’re not only improving waste management but also fostering long-term behaviour change that benefits the entire community."
