A new tree sponsorship scheme has been introduced at Cheltenham’s cemetery and crematorium, located at Bouncers Lane.
This scheme allows members of the public to commemorate a loved one or an event while helping to improve the surrounding area and environment.
Members of the public can sponsor a native oak tree which will be planted in an area close to the new chapels. This scheme replaces the previous tree sponsorship scheme in Cheltenham’s parks, where space can be limited.
The trees will be planted during the winter months to help with establishment and growth. As there are few young but long-lived trees on the site, introducing native oak trees will not only make the area feel more mature, but will also bring the associated ecological and environmental benefits to the cemetery.
Cllr Izaac Tailford, cabinet member for waste, recycling, and public realm, said: “I am delighted to see this tree sponsorship scheme introduced at Bouncers Lane cemetery. It is a wonderful way for members of the public to remember loved ones or mark an event while also helping the environment. The native oak trees will provide a lasting tribute that will be enjoyed by the community for many years to come, creating a peaceful and welcoming space for everyone.”
While the new trees will belong to the council and cemetery, sponsors are encouraged to care for them, such as watering them when it is hot or dry to help them grow.
