The annual inauguration of the mayor was held at Cheltenham Town Hall at 6.30pm yesterday (Monday 20 May)
Cllr Paul Baker succeeds his predecessor, Cllr Matt Babbage, and Cllr Dr David Willingham is deputy mayor.
The mayor chairs the council and represents the borough at many local business and charity events throughout the year. This year, the new mayor has decided to focus his fundraising efforts towards four charities: Cheltenham Welcomes Refugees, Friends of Sandford Parks, AimUp and Caring for Communities and People.
Cllr Paul Baker said: “As a proud Cheltonian who was born, educated, and lived here all my life I am deeply honoured to be appointed the new Mayor of our wonderful town. I’m looking forward to a busy year of welcoming visitors, meeting local groups, organisations and businesses. As well as thanking the hundreds of volunteers who contribute so much and make such a difference to our town.
“I have chosen four charities to help raise much needed funds that reflect my values and passions. They all support our wonderful town and its people from maintaining and improving our beautiful parks to assisting people fleeing war and persecution, people with disabilities and complex needs, and those dealing with homelessness, poverty, family breakdown, and exclusion.
“I hope that the coming year will also raise the profile and awareness of these fantastic local charities which make a real difference to people’s lives.”
The Medal of Honour recipient for 2024 is David Bath for his contributions to our local community.
Cllr Matt Babbage, out-going mayor, says: “I am delighted that we have raised £30k for my chosen charities Maggie’s Cheltenham, Cotswold Riding for the Disabled and Cheltenham Open Door who all provide invaluable support to people right across our town - from those affected by cancer or living with a disability, to homelessness and isolation.
“It has been an honour to acknowledge the tireless efforts of Cheltenham resident David Bath, who received the Medal of Honour for his work for our local community.”
