Two men prosecuted for abandoned vehicles in Cheltenham

On Wednesday 20 April 2022, Marcell Banton of Hathaway Close, Gloucester was prosecuted for abandoning a vehicle on a private residential street in the Lansdown area of Cheltenham.

Mr Banton was fined £388 and ordered to pay full court costs of £944.98 and a victim surcharge of £38, totalling £1,370.98.

On the same day, Keith Musarurwa of Lyndale Road, Leicester was prosecuted for abandoning two vehicles on Kensington Avenue, Cheltenham. The first offence took place in September 2021 and the second in February 2022 when the second vehicle was deemed to be abandoned in the same location.

Mr Musarurwa was fined £940 and ordered to pay full court costs of £1,045.37 and a victim surcharge of £94, totalling £2,079.37.

The maximum penalty for abandoning a vehicle on conviction is £2,500 and/or a three month prison sentence.

Mike Redman, director of environment, said: “We are repeatedly asked to deal with abandoned cars and the community are keen for us to catch the people responsible. These prosecutions show that where there is evidence the council will issue fixed penalty notices and where appropriate pursue the matter through the courts.”
