Cheltenham’s beautiful gardens have triumphed again this year in the Heart of England in Bloom judging, with two prestigious Gold Park Awards for Imperial Gardens and Sandford Park.
The awards, earlier this month, recognise achievements in horticulture, environmental responsibility and community participation.
When upgrading Sandford Park from its Silver Gilt award presented last year, the judge particularly recognised the impressive developments in the planting at Unwin’s fountain and in the LINC sanctuary garden.
Chris Coleman, cabinet member for clean and green environment at the council, says: “The new Gold award for Sandford Park shows that environmentally-friendly and money-saving perennial schemes can be realised without compromising the very high horticultural standards for which Cheltenham is renowned.”
In Imperial Gardens - which retained its gold award from 2018 - the judge recognised on-going work to install a new entrance and railings and praised the overall appearance of the site.
Adam Reynolds, head of green space management at the council, continues: “As always, success is a team effort. I would like to thank colleagues who developed the schemes, fund-raisers, park volunteers, Ubico crews and all those who have helped with the planting and maintenance of these amazing green spaces.”
Funding for the new developments has come via Cheltenham Borough Council, Friends of Imperial Square and Gardens, LINC, Gloucestershire County Council’s Growing Communities Fund and the European Union European Regional Development Fund.
