Lights, Santa, Action!

Brand new lights, free family events and traditional festivities will add some sparkle to Cheltenham’s Christmas street party when it comes to town on 25 November 2017.  A special appearance from Father Christmas will also delight the little ones.
 

The new lights will decorate trees and lampposts in parts of the town centre, Promenade and Montpellier. The festive LED lights will be white in most areas, with an additional multi-coloured feature lighting up the Boots’ Corner area.  The lights are being brought to the town by Blachmere Illuminations, a company recognised nationally for their seasonal displays.
 

The Promenade, High Street and Regent Arcade will welcome families for music and street entertainment.  Traditional music from the Salvation Army band will create a warm atmosphere in Montpellier and the Brewery Quarter will add to the fun, hosting a variety of acts from 3pm onwards. Father Christmas will be visiting each of the areas to chat to children and find out what’s on their wish list.

For anyone wishing to do a spot of Christmas shopping, they can visit the ever popular Christmas market which will be back on the Promenade and many shops will also begin their later opening hours.
 

The new lights and exciting programme of events are being delivered in a collaboration between the borough council and BID (Business Improvement District).

Kevan Blackadder, BID director said:  ‘’After months of hard work and planning, we are excited to be offering so much over the festive period for residents and visitors this year.  I am pleased that the BID have had the opportunity to work with the council to look at what has been offered in previous years and build on that to offer something really exciting.
 

‘’I will also be working with local businesses this year to encourage them to embrace the festive season with window displays and lights of their own.’’
 

Councillor Steve Jordan, leader at Cheltenham Borough Council added:  ‘’This year, as well as a whole package of Christmas activities and events, we have an entirely new supply of Christmas lights.  Cheltenham is always popular at Christmas time because of the great shopping, family activities, restaurants and bars. I am sure that everything planned will draw even more people to our town.’’

Notes

Parts of the High Street are still undergoing significant refurbishment in line with the development of the John Lewis store and it is hoped that more festivities will be added in future years.
