Cheltenham is set to get 103 new trees as the council’s annual tree planting season gets underway.
Cheltenham Tree Group has kindly supplied and planted 40 broadleaved trees for Pittville open space and these trees will make a fantastic addition to the area.
A large variety of species has been chosen from silver birch, tulip tree to blue arrow and maidenhair trees. The trees will be planted in 15 locations across the borough including; Beeches playing field, Cirencester Road open space, Swindon Village playing field, Montpellier Gardens and Hatherley Park. The planting of a large variety of species is seen as good practice with threats to trees from pests and diseases as well as from climate change.
Michael Doust, trees officer for Cheltenham Borough Council, says: “We look forward to this time of year when we can plan how we can make these valuable additions to our parks and green spaces. We’re fortunate to have help from Cheltenham Tree Group and our local friends groups who work with us to make our parks the very best that they can be.”
Cllr Chris Coleman, cabinet member for clean and green environment, continues: “Cheltenham is well known for its beautiful parks and trees and we’re looking forward to planting new specimens over the next couple of weeks. Cheltenham has around 60,000 trees including council and privately owned trees. We are lucky to have mature forest trees though-out our rich parkland and tree-lined streets as well as a range of exotic and ornamental trees.”
