Ensuring animal welfare
Cheltenham Borough Council believes we have a moral responsibility to all sentient species and for the protection of their ecosystem, and supports the view that all animal have the right to a life free from cruel treatment and unnecessary suffering. Through engagement, education, encouragement, and enforcement, we will work with partners to ensure the basic welfare needs of animals are met as set out in the Animal Welfare Act 2006:
- The need for a suitable environment
- The need for a suitable diet
- The need to exhibit normal behaviour
- Any need it has to be housed with or apart from other animals
- The need to be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease
Our animal welfare charter outlines important areas in which we can have an impact as a responsible and representative public body through our decision-making process, business operations, procurement, and influence.
