Volunteer flood wardens
We’re currently recruiting flood warden volunteers!
Do you want to play a key role in helping your community prepare for, respond to and recover from flooding?
As a flood warden volunteer you will be a vital link between your neighbourhood and those responsible for responding to flood events. Forging strong links within communities across the Borough will be critical to building resilience as we face the challenge of adapting to the impacts of climate change.
Volunteering as a flood warden can be great way to get to know people in your local area and spend more time outdoors in nature. We are pretty flexible about when and how you volunteer, so this role can be usually tailored to suit the hours you are able to offer.
- Spend more time in nature and help us to monitor local watercourses
- Get to know your community and communicate about flooding in person and online
- Warn about flooding encourage residents to be prepared and sign up for flood alerts
- Champion resilience as we adapt to the impacts of climate change
- Help us support vulnerable residents who may require additional support during a flood
- Be a vital neighbourhood link between residents, the Council and emergency services
- Report and record flooding share your local knowledge and signpost to relevant agencies
- Help with recovery after flooding and share information about available support
A full training session, flood warden handbook, high-vis jacket, volunteer lanyard and ID card will be provided. You will also be allocated a member of staff who will check in with you throughout the year and you can contact if you have any questions or reports.
We’re looking for you!
We want to develop an active network of volunteers along our local watercourses and in flood prone areas around the borough. However it doesn’t necessarily matter if you don’t live near a river. There are many other sources of flooding too including surface water, groundwater, highways drainage and sewers. You can still help us to communicate about flood resilience and help people in your area to understand how to be better prepared and who to contact if a flood occurs. If you live in a house that is prone to flooding please think carefully about your availability before applying.
