High-impact animation planned for WW1 commemoration

On Sunday November 11, as part of Cheltenham Remembers Remembrance Sunday commemoration events, a 10 to 15 minute high-impact film of WW1 imagery will be projected onto the Municipal Offices throughout the late afternoon and into the evening and will be accessible to everyone.

The projection event is allied to the Everyman Theatre concert ‘A Hundred years On, being held earlier in the afternoon.

Created by a Tim Mountain of Evenlode Productions, a local film production company, working with students and graduates from across Gloucestershire, the film will be reflective of the sounds scenes and emotions of the time and will be the first ever film projected directly on to a historic building in Cheltenham.

Tim Mountain, of Evenlode Productions, says: "Evenlode Productions are thrilled to produce this visual, light and sound spectacle, the likes never before seen in Cheltenham.  We will be projecting an amazing 50 metre digital arts projection onto the magnificent Municipal Offices building, in celebration of the WW1 Centenary.  

“Some of the most talented animation students from the University of Gloucestershire have been invited to work with Evenlode Productions and contribute to this project. It will be a great opportunity for them to be part of such a large scale professional production and they are very excited to see their original content on such a giant screen!  Projections of this scale are awe-inspiring and something not to be missed. WW1 will come to life in the centre of Cheltenham on Armistice Day 2018.” 

Cllr Flo Clucas cabinet member for healthy lifestyles, said: “Those men and women who lived through, fought in and kept the homes fires burning were incredible people. They were the heart of Cheltenham. They lived through privation, grief, horror and loss. On the day of Remembrance, the centre of Cheltenham will be given over to commemorate them, the men and women of our town. This historic event, with its stunning imagery projected onto a building they would have known so well, will be a fitting tribute to those who gave all.” 

Paul Milton, creative director, Everyman Theatre says: “The Everyman Theatre is very excited to be supporting this unique film event - a real highlight of what promises to be a weekend packed with wonderful commemorative events. We hope that our audience for “A Hundred Years On” will, after the show at the Everyman, process with the Cheltenham Silver Band to the Municipal Offices to see this inventive and imaginative filmic display.”

Cheltenham Borough Council have been successful in obtaining funding of £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund ‘First World War Then and Now’ grant programme. The event is also supported by The Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham Borough Council, Cheltenham BID and the Public Art Panel.
